Not every pest problem is bed bugs or mice. Plenty involve smaller insects that turn up in kitchens, bathrooms, basements and windows.

These pests are usually linked to a specific source — a forgotten bag of flour, a damp drain, a pet that brought fleas home. Finding that source is the key to getting rid of them.

Not sure what it is? Send us a description and we'll help identify it.

Signs of a hidden pest source

Smaller pests often point to something nearby. Watch for:

  • Flies that return after cleaning

Usually a sign of a breeding spot in a drain, garbage area or overripe produce.

  • Moths or webbing in the pantry

Small moths flying in the kitchen, or silky webbing in flour, cereal or rice.

  • Tiny beetles in dry food

Small brown beetles in spices, pet food, crackers or other dried goods.

  • Bites around the ankles

Itchy bites on the lower legs, especially after a pet has been outside, can mean fleas.

  • Insects gathering at windows

Clusters of lady beetles or tiny red mites on sunny walls and windowsills in spring or fall.

Flies

Most fly problems come from a breeding spot nearby.

  • Fruit flies

Small flies around produce, recycling and drains. They breed in fermenting food and residue.

  • Drain (moth) flies

Fuzzy, moth-like flies near sinks, showers and floor drains. They breed in the film inside pipes.

  • Blow flies

Large, shiny blue or green flies. They often point to rotting garbage or another decaying source nearby.

  • Fungus gnats

Tiny dark flies around houseplants, breeding in damp potting soil.

Pantry pests

These insects live in dry food and spread from package to package.

  • Indian meal moths

Small moths with copper-tipped wings. Their larvae leave webbing in flour, cereal, nuts and pet food.

  • Cigarette and drugstore beetles

Tiny brown beetles that feed on spices, flour, dried goods and even books.

Silverfish

Silvery, fast-moving, wingless insects found in bathrooms, basements and other damp areas. They feed on paper, glue and starches, and reducing moisture is a big part of controlling them.

Fleas

Fleas usually arrive on pets and spread into carpets, bedding and furniture. Treating the home while your vet treats the pet breaks the cycle.

Lady beetles and clover mites

Both gather on sunny walls and slip in through small gaps. Sealing entry points helps keep them out.

  • Lady beetles

Multicoloured Asian lady beetles cluster on walls in the fall, looking for a warm place to spend the winter.

  • Clover mites

Tiny red mites that crawl in around windows in spring and fall. They leave red stains when crushed.

How we treat other pests

Smaller insects need the right identification first. Treatment for fleas looks very different from treatment for pantry moths.

  1. Step 1: Inspect

We identify the insect and track down where it's breeding or getting in.

  2. Step 2: Plan

We explain what it is, where it's coming from and what needs to be cleaned out or fixed. You receive a quote and approve the price before any treatment begins.

  3. Step 3: Treat

Depending on the pest, we use targeted residual applications, vacuuming, monitoring traps and exclusion at entry points.

  4. Step 4: Follow up & prevent

We give you sanitation and prevention advice for that pest. Follow-up visits may be recommended or included depending on the service package.

How to prepare

Preparation depends on the pest. Common steps include:

  • Keep a sample of the insect, or an affected package, so we can identify it.
  • Pantry pests: empty the affected shelves.
  • Fleas: vacuum floors and furniture, and wash pet bedding.
  • Flies: take out garbage and clean drains and bins.
  • Lady beetles and clover mites: avoid crushing them — they can stain walls and fabric.

Final preparation instructions will be provided based on the treatment method and product requirements.

Service warranty available, conditions apply. Subject to following our preparation and prevention recommendations.

Common questions

I don't know what the insect is. Can you still help?
Yes. Describe what you're seeing when you get in touch — size, colour and where you find it. We'll help identify it.
Why do pantry moths keep coming back?
Eggs and larvae hide in packages, shelf cracks and even unopened boxes. If one infested item is missed, the cycle starts again. A thorough clean-out and sealed containers make a big difference.
How do I get rid of fruit flies?
Remove the source: overripe produce, recycling, drains and garbage. If they keep coming back, there's likely a hidden breeding spot, and we can help find it.
Do you treat fleas?
Yes. We treat the home while you work with your vet to treat your pet. Both need to happen at the same time to break the cycle.
Why are lady beetles getting inside in the fall?
They're looking for a warm place to spend the winter. Sealing gaps around windows, siding and vents helps keep them out.
Do you treat silverfish?
Yes. Silverfish thrive in damp areas, so treatment works best alongside reducing moisture in bathrooms and basements.
